Mathmatica V8.0.0 help replacing a the formula with the vari

I have a symbolic set of equations. They have a load of variables. I need to make the formulas "cleaner". For an example that isn't as drastic as what I have, I have sigma/kappa=tan[a*kappa- phi]. Well, in this I want to call (a*kappa)=u. And when the program displays this equation I want it to display and equation with u in it. Is this possible? I mean I also have kappa=(blah blah) and I just want it to display kappa in stead of "blah blah" but I need it to "remember" what kappa means so I can manipulate it later. Suggestions?

If I have understood you correctly...

you could make one of the names the name of a variable which you state is equal to the other.
